BRAGA, November 24, 2025 — As part of the Portuguese Week of Science, the AI2PI Portuguese team hosted a hands-on workshop on Artificial Intelligence in Education, engaging higher education students in a critical exploration of AI’s role in future teaching practice. Participants compared analogue and AI-supported approaches to problem-solving, uncovering both the efficiencies and the ethical complexities of generative tools. The session reinforced a central premise of AI2PI: AI is not a shortcut to innovation, but a catalyst for reflective, responsible pedagogical transformation.

Within the framework of the Portuguese Week of Science, the Portuguese team of the AI2PI project organized a workshop entitled “Educating with Artificial Intelligence (AI): Opportunities and Challenges.” The session was delivered by Eva Fernandes, with the collaboration of Daniel Rosa.

The activity targeted higher education students in the field of education and aimed to promote AI literacy, critical thinking, and ethical awareness regarding the integration of artificial intelligence into educational practice. The workshop contributes to the project’s broader objectives of supporting the responsible adoption of AI in education and preparing future educators for digitally enhanced learning environments.

Participants engaged in a problem-based learning activity focused on promoting healthy habits in a school context. The task was carried out in two stages: initially using analogue methods only, and subsequently with the support of generative AI tools. This structured comparison enabled participants to assess the added value of AI in terms of efficiency, creativity, and problem-solving capacity, while also identifying potential risks, limitations, and ethical considerations.

The session concluded with a collective sharing of results via an online collaborative platform, followed by a guided reflection. Discussions emphasized the importance of human oversight, critical evaluation of AI outputs, and responsible use aligned with educational values. Overall, the workshop contributed to raising awareness of both the opportunities and challenges associated with AI in education, reinforcing the view of AI as a strategic tool for pedagogical innovation when used in a conscious, ethical, and reflective manner.
